At Last: Progress!

Our four brand-new hydroponic growing systems are now up and running. Just yesterday, we started our first seedlings in them, and it’s hard to contain our excitement!

With the construction part of this expansion finally behind us, we can now turn our attention to the greens and lettuces that these new systems will be home to.

In just a few weeks, these seedlings will have been grown, harvested, and found their way into kitchens throughout our community. Stay tuned – we’ll be sure to keep you updated on what’s happening at the farm in the near future!

Under Construction

Our growing capabilities are in the midst of a major upgrade, so if you stop by the farm this week, please pardon our appearance. The process of building four new machines on site has left the place looking slightly disheveled, but we’d like to think that’s just what progress looks like. The results will be coming soon: more greens, grown better, always the freshest!

Arugula…oh how I wished I loved thee…

Lots of folks love Arugula — I am just not one of those people. They tell me that the Arugula Lansdowne Urban Farms grows is very good. I’ve tried it…but its not going to be in a salad that I eat anytime soon. Maybe it should be on your salad?

More varieties are coming soon! Also this week, we have a Lettuce Leaf Basil special. Order early for best results.

South Side Thursday Night!

Come on out tonight! Our Parris Island Cos Romaine is ready and delicious!

In the next 10 days, we will have Black Magic Kale and Lettuce Leaf Basil and a new Japanese Green called Chijimisai that is loaded with flavor and nutrients. This stunning new superfood contains four times as much vitamin A as carrots! It is also a great source of minerals and protein. You will not be disappointed.

When is Lansdowne Urban Farms Open?

Good question.

The simplest answer is: When we have greens ready to sell, we will be open.

We will annnounce openings and available greens in four places:

  1. Via subscriber emails. Join our mailing list here.
  2. On Facebook
  3. On Instagram
  4. Our website

We hope to be open for business as much as possible, but in light of the unpredictable nature of the business, we want to be flexible. If you need us to bring greens to your home in Lansdowne, we can do that. If you want to stop by the farm at 23 South Lansdowne Ave. and pick up produce, we can do that as well. Let us know.

Our food is delicious, we want you to get it.

Why can’t we be open all the time?

For the time being, without food to sell, it simply does not make sense to use our resources to keep the Farm store open. We are managing the limited growing capacity we have with two hydroponic units, and the growing cycle takes about four weeks (from seedlings started two weeks earlier). Once ready, we have about 10 days to sell those greens at their optimal eating stage. Then the process starts again.

We hope to build some smaller units in the next few weeks to spread out our growing a bit. We also want to create a universe where people eat food when it’s available to them. It’s the same concept as eating strawberries in May and June, but in January, when they sat on a truck for five days to get to you. Fresher. Better. Closer.

Our work at the farm continues daily. If you see us working inside, we might have the door locked, so please just knock.

If you want to arrange a private tour, just email us.

Thank you for your support as we work to bring fresh, hyper-local, nutritious food to our community.

Round #2!

We made it though our first Monster planting. We did not do everything right (lol) but still managed to grow and sell a very decent amount of Parris Island Cos Romaine Lettuce, Black Magic Kale and Lettuce Leaf Basil for our first time out. If you were among our first customers, thank you. If not, I hope you will try our amazing produce soon.

Now on to Round #2!
